THE STORY BEHIND THE MURAL

Terrorized by a creature in 1973, Murphysboro, Illinois, was thrust into fabled lore! Thought to have come out of a local river called the Big Muddy, the legend of the Big Muddy Monster was born on those nights. The events and eyewitnesses have been well-chronicled in local papers and in more significant markets like The New York Times. There is also a file on the City of Murphysboro’s website containing all the police reports. The mural depicts those evenings and sightings and is a collaboration between Silkworm, Inc. and the Revitalize 62966: Arts in the Community committee.

This mural was made possible through generous donations from Silkworm and the citizens and friends of Murphysboro.

Each mural takes a whimsical nod to the town’s hallmark by hiding in plain sight a caricature of an apple 🍎.
