8 p.m. Saturday, June 29
Fresh off of the release of their debut studio album “Foundations of Modern Funk,” Lucas Feather and the Underclassmen will take The Varsity stage for an album release show. The band plays an energetic mix of funk, bluegrass, rock and soul. Bluegrass and roots fiddle player Beth Davis will open the June 29 concert.
Lucas Feather and the Underclassmen began at Carbondale High School in 2016, when David McEathron invited Drake Martin to jam with him and Berget Borowitz. After several rehearsals, the idea of adding another member, Lucas Feather, emerged. They played a few gigs and won the school’s talent show. When Lucas readied to graduate and head to college, Jillian Meredith was added to the band. Once Lucas left for Ole Miss, sax player Aron Taylor was added. Lucas’ return for Christmas break was met with a sold-out show at The Varsity. In preparation for summer, they added Max Johnson on trumpet. They went on to play regionally and headlined the main concert during Carbondale’s June festival, Celebrate 618.
Members of the band are David McEathron, CP33, vocals; Berget Borowitz on drums, vocals; Drake Martin on bass; Jillian Meredith on trumpet, vocals; Max Johnson on trumpet and tambourine; Aron Taylor on tenor sax; and Lucas Feather on alto sax.
Beth Davis of Carbondale began playing fiddle at the age of 3. After a few years of classical lessons, Beth turned to bluegrass and roots music. She has won six state fiddle championships and is the reigning Illinois State Junior Champion, placing first in her division and second in the open division. She performs in many bluegrass festivals and competitions throughout the Midwest.
Tickets are not available in advance at the venue but will be available on the night of the show when doors and the Varsity Bar open at 7.
