St. Andrew Catholic Church stands as a beacon of faith in Murphysboro. The first church built on this site was a small wooden structure that burnt to the ground in 1888. With a new cornerstone laid on April 4, 1889, workers finished construction later that year, built in the Side Steeple style. The church was enlarged and remodeled in the ensuing 100 years, with the Bell Tower added in 1907. The steeple, built in 1905, is 117 years old.
